Mother's Day - Sharing Treasures and Memories

I am starting a little mini series today in honor of Mother's Day and the women - daughter, mother, grandmother and great grandmother - who have made me the person I am today.  Little bits and pieces of each of them that bring back treasured memories.

Diane gave me the idea several months ago when she told me I just HAD to share pictures of my Grandmother Gwen's Fiesta skirt that had just arrived in the mail from my Mother.

You might remember this picture of my Grandmother showing off her beautiful, brand new, custom made Santa Fe Fiesta Dress.  Soon after I posted, my Mother asked me if Iwould like to have the skirt!!!

When I shared it with Diane, she made me promise to share it with all of you!  Something about how much you would love seeing the rows and rows of rick rack and fringe and trim!  The skirt was made over 50 years ago, so - you know - she was "geeking out" on all that vintage embellishment!

So I made a few close-ups for you - because I always do what Diane tells me to do!  Enjoy!

What is amazing is that this is a circular skirt which means the straight trim and rick rack had to be applied in a curve.  And it is perfect!

Black cotton fringe was applied to the bottom edge of the skirt as well as at some of the seams between tiers.

Although Gwennie owned several Fiesta Dresses, this was the one I most loved seeing her wear.  Wearing this dress and tons of silver and turquoise jewelry, she really did look just like a queen.

Happy Mother's Day!

I remember that post! The

I remember that post! The layered rick rack is so cool. It's good to listen to Diane. :)

Happy very belated Mother's

Happy very belated Mother's Day to you Pam!
I remember that gorgeous photo of your grandmother from the old post, it's fantastic. It's lovely that the skirt is now yours. If you can't think of a good occasion for wearing it then you'll have to create one. Have a fiesta! If you live in a neighbourhood have a block party. If I lived in your neighbourhood I would come and little G and I would make a great big pinata for all the children.
Happy Thursday to you :)

I think you need to wear that

I think you need to wear that lovely skirt at your next garden party! It's beautiful. Love all the detailed work.

Hope you're doing well and your garden is changing by the day. Minus the weeds of course! :)

that skirt is indeed a

that skirt is indeed a treasure! My goodness, it's gorgeous. And I too have tried to applique something straight onto something curved...I ended up with a puckered mess & gave up. But this is amazing & inspiring. Thank you for the close ups :).

Okay, I think I remember

Okay, I think I remember seeing that picture before...it stuck with me. I love that skirt...the craftsmanship is humbling.

Those close ups really do

Those close ups really do show how well this was made. I know how hard it is to get straight trim around something that's not straight.

I hope you had a wonderful Mother's day!

I love how color saturated

I love how color saturated these photos are.

The rick-rack really makes the skirt special.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I hope you make Arroz con Pollo for your sweetie; it's SO good.

Warmly,
Nicole

If your Grandmother made this

If your Grandmother made this festive skirt herself, I definitely see where you get your craftiness! Is it an inherited gift?

Craftyness in my family seems

Craftyness in my family seems to have skipped a couple generations before resurfacing!  My graqndmother had many talents and special qualities - one being able to love unconditionally - but sewing, and art and craft were not among them!  She did not make the skirt.  It was made by one of the few women in Santa Fe at the time that had created very successful home businesses of making custom Fiesta dresses.  Unfortunately neither I nor my mother remember the maker and there are no tags remaining on the garment.

My mother was in charge of my grandmother's estate and had saved the skirt; and after the post last year, gave it to me.

Beautiful!! Hope you had a

It's beautiful! Do you ever wear it?

I havent worn it yet, Liz.

I havent worn it yet, Liz.  If i still lived in Santa Fe, I probably would wear it at Fiesta.  I am trying to think of a good occasion though because it is so full and swirly and swishy -

WOW, that skirt is beautiful!
