"Tough Love" Quilt Pillow

My most recent project from "Quilting Happiness" - created using Diane's creative exercise called "Tough Love" in which it is suggested that I select a quilt from the book that  I "don't like that much" and then make up the block in a selection of my favorite fabrics. The idea is not to judge the quilt by the fabrics chosen - but rather to create a quilt block in colors that appeal to my own color taste and see if it makes a change in the way I respond to the pattern.

OMG! Diane's exercise totally works!!! I can not believe the difference changing the fabric can make! What a cool learning experience!

And she offers two other variations on this exercise that sound like lots of fun! 1) Selecting a block you DO like and making it up in fabrics you do not!! 2) Choosing a block design in the book and challenging yourself to come up with 12 different color schemes for it!

Diane's "happiness practices" and "creative exercises" give this book lasting value and make it useful to creatives beyond the quilting community. Anyone involved in the art of making will find the exercises a useful tool for expanding and kick-starting their creativity.

To create my own version of Christina's Bric-a-Brack Quilt, I used bits and pieces of fabrics left over from making my yoyo tide pool pillow. Both pillows have deep turquoise accents so blend beautifully with the sun painted fern fabric I used to make Christina's Chevron Pillow!

I love how they all look together. And honestly, if it had not been for "Quilting Happiness" coming along - none of these pillows would have existed! So I guess one could say this is a great example of what "quilting happiness" looks like!!!

Good luck to everyone entering the giveaway for a copy of "Quilting Happiness". And also keep in mind that this book will make every quilter on your holiday gift list very happy!!!
