Snowflakecal and YarniaPDX = Beautiful and Very Quick to Make Gifts to be Used on Holiday Tables!

 holiday table hot pads

The Snowflakecal, hosted by IMake, is drawing to a close and Martine has requested that during November we share how we plan to use all the snowflakes we have crocheted the past 11 months using patterns found in 100 Snowflakes to Crochet by Caitlin Sainio..

Hopefully, the image above is pretty clear about what I am doing with mine! I have been crocheting snowflakes like mad lately to share as gifts. Bulky weight yarn and a size J crochet hook result in snowflakes that are not only festive but the perfect size for use as protective table pads for hot dishes.

And this set just came off the hook! A beautiful Yarnia PDX blend of white and blue yarns created especially for my Dad's birthday and to be used during Hanukkah!

I selected three of my favorite patterns from the book for his set: Halo, Noreaster III, and Ice Prisms. They went together so quickly - all three in about 2 1/2 hours.

The yarn??? A 100% wool custom blend created at Yarnia PDX! For the snowflakes above, five strands of fingerling weight yummy Brown Sheep wool - four off white and one moss green The pretty hot pads will blend in well with most holiday table decors and drops of gravy will likely go un-noticed!

The Hanukkah table hot pads are crocheted using four strands of white fingerling Brown Sheep wool and one of ice blue.

And i am thinking that a blend of four white and one red would make a lovely set of peppermint snowflake hot pads!

(Important word to the wise! This is not a good "scrap project" unless all your scraps are 100% wool. Synthetic yarns will melt. Don't use them.)

Perfect last minute gifts for those of you still wanting to make something handmade but still not started! (And hint: there are lots of snowflake patterns available for free on the internet if you don't have the book - just do a google search).

Order your yarn here at Yarnia, they will wind it up and send it right out! My blend is composed of five strands of Brown Sheep 100% wool fingerling. Choose to go all one color or a blend. You don't need to live in Portland! Just go to the Custom Yarn "toy" on the Yarnia PDX site right here. Or e-mail Lindsey and tell her you want "Pam's snowflake blend"!)

Each snowflake required approximately 1 1/2oz of this particular yarn blend.

Order a cone full and make lots!!! You could knock a big hole in your gift list in one day!!!

In my opinion, the more densely crocheted patterns make a more substantial pad and better protect the underlying surface.
